 he Declaration of Independence. The three-part series will explore the exp
 eriences of Texans who faced injustice and advocated for greater rights an
 d equality\, with lectures focusing on the 1977 National Women’s Conferenc
 e\, the 1960s Chicano Student Movement\, and the Texas Freedom Colonies Pr
 oject.\n\nImmediately following the presentation: \nStories of Change: The
  Fight for Civil Rights in South Texas\nLecture by Dr. James Barrera\n\nDr
 . Barrera is a professor of history at South Texas College in McAllen. In 
 conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month\, he will speak on his research w
 ith a focus on the history of Latinos/Mexican Americans in the U.S.\, emph
 asizing civil rights\, social movements\, cultural identity\, and educatio
 nal activism in the 20th century. Dr. Barrera will discuss the challenges 
 that Latinos/Mexican Americans faced in Texas as well as the relationship
