"Fronterizo Dreaming" Opening Reception - Webb County Heritage Foundation
Laredo, TX – The Webb County Heritage Foundation invites the public to an opening reception for “Fronterizo Dreaming” an exhibit of artwork by Julio Obscura and Josias Figueirido on Thursday, August 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Villa Antigua® Border Heritage Museum at 810 Zaragoza St.
Through a wide range of media from painting and installation to virtual and augmented reality, Fronterizo Dreaming tells real and imaginary stories of people impacted by moving, relocating, crossing borders, and finding themselves in new and unfamiliar environments.
Julio Obscura and Josias Figueirido are storytellers influenced by their personal experiences living on the US-Mexican border. Obscura documents the complexity of forming cultural identities. Figueirido channels his experiences, memories, and reflections through imagination into highly inventive narratives. Both artists embrace technology to aid their creative processes and examine their ideas, engaging their audiences in a space that fluctuates between the digital and the physical.
Julio Cesar Obscura is a Mexican-American artist based in Washington, D.C. His work explores and documents the complex weaving of identity, immigration, climate change, politics and cultural heritage. He is a Royal Society of Arts fellow, the first and former Fulbright Scholar at Royal College of Art in London where he received an MA, and holds a BA from Texas A&M International University.
Josias Figueirido was born in Santa Eugenia de Riveira, a small fishing town in the northwest of Spain. After completing his undergraduate studies in London, he moved to Philadelphia to pursue his graduate studies. Since 2020 he has been living in Laredo where he combines his studio work with teaching at Texas A&M International University.
The exhibit will be on display from August 17 until September 22, 2023. Museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Villa Antigua® Border Heritage Museum is located at 810 Zaragoza St. in downtown Laredo, Texas.
