The grant presentation for the Bryan Museum is scheduled for September 17 at 4:30 p.m. in Galveston, during one of the museum’s Fall Lecture Series events.

The grant will supports the Bryan Museum's Fall lecture series, “Hard-Won Freedoms in America,” presented in conjunction with the statewide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The three-part series will explore the experiences of Texans who faced injustice and advocated for greater rights and equality, with lectures focusing on the 1977 National Women’s Conference, the 1960s Chicano Student Movement, and the Texas Freedom Colonies Project.

Stories of Change: The Fight for Civil Rights in South Texas
Lecture by Dr. James Barrera

Dr. Barrera is a professor of history at South Texas College in McAllen. In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, he will speak on his research with a focus on the history of Latinos/Mexican Americans in the U.S., emphasizing civil rights, social movements, cultural identity, and educational activism in the 20th century. Dr. Barrera will discuss the challenges that Latinos/Mexican Americans faced in Texas as well as the relationship of Chicano students and the school systems.
