Coastal Treasures: History Museums on the Gulf Coast

Flier for the first-ever Texas History Symposium, June 15 2024 at the Bryan Museum in Galveston.

Palacios Area Historical Association

June 14 | City by the Sea Museum | 401 Commerce St, Palacios

Texas Historical Foundation members will gather at Palacios’ City by the Sea Museum on Friday, June 14 to present a recent grant to Palacios Area Historical Association (PAHA). The grant supports the installation of interactive oral history kiosks throughout the Museum. Since their founding in 1982, PAHA has dedicated themselves to preserving and sharing local history, envisioning the City by the Sea Museum as an important repository for regional history and arts.

The project will employ interactive digital kiosks to capture museum-goers recollections of Palacios history on subjects from the City by the Sea’s expansive collections, both for posterity and incorporation into future exhibits. The first wave of implementation will collect stories on subjects including the famed La Belle Excavation, Camp Hulen in WWII, and local Vietnamese history.

Cavalla Historical Foundation

June 14 | Galveston Naval Museum | 100 Seawolf Park Dr., Galveston

The same day, members are invited to attend a presentation recognizing Cavalla Historical Foundation’s recent THF grant to restore the USS Cavalla, a Gato-class submarine first launched in the 1940s, now a beloved fixture of the Galveston coast.

The Cavalla Historical Foundation was established in 1999 with the mission of preserving two WWII-era naval ships previously slated to be scrapped, the USS Stewart and Cavalla. After securing ownership, CHF set about opening the ships to the public as part of Galveston Naval Museum and creating the Seawolf Park campus in which the Museum is situated.

Today, Seawolf Park attracts thousands of visitors a year, eager to explore the vessels and immerse themselves in Naval history. Visit galvestonnavalmuseum.com to learn more and view upcoming events.
