THF Grant Presentation: La Junta Patriotica of Melvin
THF presented La Junta Patriotica of Melvin with a grant that will assist the organization with the purchase of materials and supplies to repair the wooden windows of the historic Jimenez dancehall.
According to the Texas Folklore Society, "from 1930-1970, La Plataforma Jimenez was a space for Melvin's Mexican community to gather and to maintain its link to the Villa de Jimenez in Mexico," where many of the early settlers of the colony were from. Festivals and dances were held here, featuring popular musical acts like Grammy award-winning Flaco Jimenez and Beto Villa, the father of Conjunto music. The Plataforma also served as a space for the Latin American Parent Teachers Association to meet and discuss the Melvin school board's de facto segregation policies, and as overflow classroom space.
